Phacil was asked to present today at the Alliance Mid-Atlantic Small Business Procurement Fair where over 600 people, mainly representing other small businesses, were in attendance. Phacil’s CEO and Co-Founder, Rafael Collado, was a featured presenter along with the SBA Regional Administrator, Michael J. Pappas. The Alliance Fair is a meeting place for suppliers and buyers of government contracts to make hundreds of face-to-face contacts in one day, receive contact information for buyers and contracting officers, and meet companies that could potentially become "partners" in preparing proposals and contracts.
Mr. Collado shared his story as a Co-Founder of Phacil and offered pointers on what it took for him and his Co-Founder/Partner, Mr. Sascha Mornell, to succeed in the government contracting industry as well as likely pitfalls to expect.
For example, during the first three years of business, Mr. Collado mentioned that he and Mr. Mornell faced numerous obstacles – denials for 8(a) Small Disadvantaged Business certification from the SBA, inexplicable delays on their government clearance applications, and innumerable rejections on their business proposals. Despite these obstacles, continued Mr. Collado, he and his partner persevered. How? By going to the local Congressional representative who assisted with the application for 8(a) certification, endlessly prodding the government regarding their clearance status as well as meeting with the Director of the Agency, twice, in order to advance their cause.
Mr. Collado’s message to other aspiring businesses was that it is not uncommon to knock on 100 doors for 1 to open. He assured the audience that with hard work, perseverance and dedication to the customer, it is possible to succeed in the government contracting industry.
